How to Choose the Right Lawyer

When selecting a lawyer, consider the following factors:

  • Comfort Level - Do you feel at ease sharing personal details? Does the lawyer show genuine interest in your case?
  • Experience & Credentials - How long has the lawyer been practicing? How many handled cases similar to yours?
  • Fees & Billing - Does the lawyer charge an hourly rate or a flat fee? Can they provide an estimate for your case?
  • Location - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located for you?

Questions to Ask a Lawyer

Not sure what to ask during your consultation? Here are a few key questions:

  • How long have you been practicing law?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • Do you typically settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and payment structure?
  • What are the next steps in my case?

Checking Lawyer Discipline

Before hiring a lawyer, it's important to research their background. Each state has a disciplinary board that tracks attorney licenses and consumer complaints. Looking into a lawyer's disciplinary history can help you:

  • Confirm they are licensed to practice in your state.
  • Understand any past disciplinary actions.
  • Evaluate the severity of any complaints, from minor infractions to serious violations.
